Python is a programming language that is easy to learn because of its use of indentation. The latest upgrade of Python is Python 3.10 which was released on October 4th 2021. You can download it from here

Some of the features that are in the latest version include:

  • Parenthesized context managers where it allows you to split one line to multiple lines by use of parentheses as opposed to the previous version that used the \ character.
  • Better error messages. This is a massive improvement to showing what type of error it is. Example; attribute error, syntax error, indentation error etc.
  • Precise line numbers for debugging and other tools
  • Structural Pattern Matching
  • In this guide, I will show you how to install Python 3.10 on Windows 10 / Windows 11
  • checking the version via command prompt,
  • Installing packages/modules,
  • checking the packages/modules version.

Install Python 3.10 on Windows 10 / Windows 11

Visit Python releases page to download python 3.10. Alternatively you can visit the official site for Python and get it from there from the downloads section.

Once the download is done, Find the setup and click on it to install.

The wizard opens as follows. Remember to tick the Add to Path checkbox, then now click on Install Now. You can customize the settings if you want, I chose to go with the default. 

Then the installation begins.

The installation is successful and this window shows it. Click on “Close” to quit the installer.

You can confirm if your python install was successful by typing python on the Windows search bar.

You can also use the command prompt by typing python as shown below

From Python 2.7 and over, pip which is the preferred installer program comes with the setup by default. So it is already installed.

You can check this by using the command prompt and typing  pip –version then press Enter.

Open your Python and it opens as follows

You can now try to download different packages/modules by using the code pip install [package/module name].

Note: Replace the package/module name with the preferred package you want and remove the square brackets also.

For example if I was to download a package called flask I would use pip install flask then the download start as shown below.

In case you get an update prompt while installing any package by using pip, Just copy the command given from the comment after the installation then press Enter.

From my example while installing flask I got an update prompt for pip as shown below

Copy the command directly without the quotation marks then press enter to do the update and you are good to go.

Checking Python Version

To check the python version you can use the code python –version with the command prompt.

To check the version by using the python script,  use the code import sys press Enter.

Type in sys.version then press Enter.

Checking Module/Package Version

To check the python module/package version use the code pip show [package/module name] with the command prompt.

From my example above of flask I would use  pip show flask 

To check the version of the package or module via the script, you should import the module first by using the code import [package/module name].

From my example above I would use import flask then press Enter.

Then use the code print (flask.__version__) then press Enter.

Simple Print

A simple print example of for hello world would use the code print(‘Hello World’) then press Enter.

Simple as that and it shows as below.

This are just the basic things one can do with Python. The installation is direct, the downloading of packages is pretty direct also. The language is all in all easy to start on. Python is a pretty easy programming language to learn but to use it in developing requires a lot of practice.
