Dropbox is a file hosting service that allows you to backup and sync your files across multiple devices. It is essentially a cloud storage service. You just have to create an account and then upload your files. To access your files from another device, you just log into your account and access them and even download them to a different device. Simple as that!

Dropbox has free and paid options that one can use. The free option is the basic plan and is mostly enough for some people. If you require more storage then you will have to look at the paid options.

Features

  • File-sharing in real-time with anyone, this includes anyone without a dropbox account. You can email a file or create a link and share it. File sharing also enables you to give and limit permissions to the folder/files shared and because it’s real-time, Any change made to the file will be known.
  • Cloud Storage service which enables you to store and backup your files. It also enables you to access your files from different devices. 
  • Remote wipe Feature that allows you to wipe data from your missing device dropbox account in case it is stolen.
  • Incase of deleting a file mistakenly, You can recover it as Dropbox keeps copies of deleted files for 30 days or as many as 180 days.
  • Sync files across devices and platforms. The desktop app allows you to synchronize data while offline and when connected to the internet, it automatically synchronizes the data with latest changes
  • Create an e-signature with Dropbox that enables you to streamline workflows like adding signatures to your documents.

In this guide, I will show you to install Dropbox using the .deb file

Install and Use Dropbox Client on KDE Neon / Kubuntu

There are two methods you can use to install Dropbox Client on KDE Neon|Kubuntu.

Install Dropbox using APT repository

Add APT repository to the system

echo "deb https://linux.dropbox.com/ubuntu xenial main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/dropbox.list

Import GPG key after the repository has been added

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys 1C61A2656FB57B7E4DE0F4C1FC918B335044912E

Install Dropbox using the .deb file

Download the .deb fie from the web.

Click on save file to store in on your local system.

Open your console and use the following command to install the file. First, change the directory to the folder with the file. Mine is in the Downloads folder.

cd Downloads
sudo dpkg -i dropbox_2020.03.04_amd64.deb

Let the installation finish.

Then search for the dropbox installer file from the applications.

Click on it to open the following prompt. Click OK to install the daemon.

Then let the installation finish.

Afterwrds, the web browser will automatically open with the link to sign in to your Dropbox account. If you don’t have one, You can create an account to link it to Dropbox.

Then it will open and show the following dashboard.

The next option is to link it. Go to the dropbox icon on the toolbar and click on it. Select the option to link it. Once linked. It will have a folder on the home directory as shown below.

Then afterward, you can open the Dropbox preferences.

This enables you to choose an option for syncing. You can also configure proxy settings using the references window.

Syncing files

I will copy 3 images in the dropbox folder

The images appear on the web console without clicking upload or anything.
