Skype is free, software that is best known for VoIP-based videotelephony, videoconferencing, and voice call. It is cross-platform and available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iPhone, and Windows 10 Mobile. Skype can also be used on Web browsers like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Safari. This provides instant messaging and video calling from the browser without installing the application on your system. Conversations are covered with the standard end-to-end encryption. You can easily sync your conversations for easy access to chat history.

We are going to Install and Use Skype on CentOS 9 / AlmaLinux 9.

Install Skype on CentOS 9 / AlmaLinux 9

To install Skype Visit the Skype Download Page to get the latest available version of the software for Linux. Select the RPM package to start the download.

You can use the wget utility to download the package.

wget https://go.skype.com/skypeforlinux-64.rpm

Install the application from the console with the following command.

sudo dnf install skypeforlinux-64.rpm

You can start Skype from the console with the following command

skypeforlinux

You can also start it from the Application Launcher

Use Skype on CentOS 9/AlmaLinux 9

Once launched for the first time, Skype opens as shown below. Click on Let’s Go to continue.

Click on the Sign in or create Button to continue.

If you have a Microsoft account already, Sign In with it. If not hit the Create Account button to Sign Up.

Input your Password the Sign In. The first setting would be to add a profile picture, You can skip this or do s at that point.

Then you would be prompted to test your audio. You can also test the Audio or skip the part.

Next would be to select whether you want to contribute by sending diagnostic and usage data. Choose the option you want to continue.

The Skype Dashboard opens as shown for the first time. It is a simple and easy interface to get started on.

The Share Profile Button allows you to share your Profile as s link to other people and invite them to connect with you on Skype.

Configure Skype on CentOS 9|AlmaLinux 9

You can further configure skype to fit your reference via the settings section. Go to Tools>>>Settings or use the Keyboard shortcut CTRL + ,.

The settings window is shown below. Under the Account & Profile Tab, you can add a profile picture if you did not do so at the start, you can edit your account details like adding a birthday and other account settings.

On the Appearance tab, you can change the theme of the application. I love Dark themes, so that is what I chose to go with.

The calling settings tab allows you to enable caller ID or set call Forwarding and voicemail features.

The Messaging settings tab enables you to further customize your message settings like showing previews of websites, use of large emoticons, and change the text size ,and many more options.

The Notifications ettings Tab allows you to edit how and what you want to receive notifications on.

The General settings tab will allow you to change settings that include the language you want to receive messages with, and also set Transalation to a different language

The Keyboard shortcuts are shown below. This will make you access Skype options in a simple and seamless way.

Skype Meeting

You can host or join a meeting using Skype.

To Host a Meeting, Click on Host a Meeting, and a link will be created for you, Enter the name of the Meeting(optional) then copy the meeting Link to share with others. You can also add other people on your contact list. Click on Start call.

The call is as shown below. You can still invite people even when the call is ongoing. To end the call, just click on the red call icon.

To Join a meeting, click on Join a meeting and paste the meeting link shared with you and click Join.

Something to Note, a conversation for the meeting is automatically created when a meeting is hosted or when you join a meeting.

You also have an option to leave and delete the Chat after you are done with the meeting.

Skype offers free calls for Skype-to-Skype and affordable call rates for offline calls.

You also have the option of adding another account to connect with people.
